Spiced cherries, pink flavors, and a slightly grainy texture. We love a good Cinsault, and this one from Donovan Rall is a great example of a varietal excelling in South Africa with gentle care and vinification.

Description

Varietal: 100% Cinsault.

Produced from 75% whole-bunch fermented grapes from Darling and 25% destemmed grapes from Swartland. Matured in foudre before aging for 8 months in 3000L Foudre and older small French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: The 2023 has lots of layers and some beautiful red fruit with crunchy, coated tannins from the stems and fresh acidity to bring the balance. No doubt their most serious Cinsault offering to date. Already drinking beautifully, but will certainly benefit from some time in the bottle.

About Donovan Rall: One of Swartland's original "garagista" producers, Donovan Rall is a key figure in South Africa's explosive New Wave movement and produces some of the country's most highly sought-after wines. Donovan founded his boutique label in 2008, finding inspiration in the Mediterranean varietals thriving in the Swartland after traveling the globe to hone his craft.

Rall's vision to create wines reflecting the unique terroir of South Africa focuses on low-intervention, small-batch winemaking that uses fruit from some of the oldest, most distinctive vineyards in Swartland and Stellenbosch. The production is intentionally limited, never exceeding 1000 cases, making these wines as rare as they are exceptional.
